Wii-kly Update: SPOGS Racing and King of the Monsters
July 7, 2008 | 9:56 AM PST

Another week, another pair of releases spread across the Virtual Console and WiiWare. And nothing especially thrilling; even Nintendo's press release seems a touch strained to emphasize any greatness. Oh well, let's see what we've got.

First up, SPOGS Racing comes to WiiWare for 1,000 Wii Points. What's a SPOG? Got me. D2C Games made this E-rated game for 1 or 2 players which features pick-up-and-play controls, arcade gameplay, and "Crash N' Grab™" instant upgrades. Great for casual or hardcore, they say, but in the end, I still don't know what a SPOG is.

The other release of the week is King of the Monsters on NEOGEO. With a touch more bite, this has an E10+ rating for 1-2 players. This 1991 SNK action/fighting game is 900 Wii Points, and lets you slip into the skin of one of six monsters as you stomp your way over Japan to fight other monsters in various cities with but one goal in mind: To be the King. In addition to regular punches and kicks, wrestling-type maneuvers are incorporated, and if that's not enough, there's always the laser eyebeams and flaming breath to help you get the pinfall. Two players can even square off or team up against two other monsters. We're sure the innocent bystanders won't really differentiate between one monster and four.
