Nintendo Fall Media Summit: Mad World
October 6, 2008 | 10:26 AM PST
At Nintendo's Fall Media Summit in San Francisco last week, we got to see a new build of Mad World. Unfortunately, Sega was not letting attendees play the game, as the Platinum Games team hasn't finalized the control scheme and doesn't want to let people play it until the control scheme is polished. However, we did get to witness a Sega employee playing the game, and it looks every bit as cool as it did at E3. We already covered the plot and rundown of what exactly Mad World is in our E3 preview, so if you need a crash course in what Mad World is, check out that write-up. These impressions will be brief, focusing on my impression of seeing it played in person.
Since I didn't get to play Mad World for myself, I can't comment on how the game plays, but I can say that it looks like fun. There are few games geared for older gamers, so Mad World is a real treat. How the game controls will have a big impact on the game, so it's impossible to give an opinion considering Sega wouldn't let anyone play the game. In this particular build, we did learn that you used the A button to grab and shake the Wii-mote to attack. Watching the Sega rep play, there seemed to be a lot of waggling. I'm hoping that the studio reconfigures the control setup to use the A button for the majority of attacking, though, as the constant waggling will likely grow old.
Overall, just watching Sega play the game, repetition could be an issue in general. The game is a brawler, so whether or not it grows tiresome or repetitive will depend on the depth of the combat. Stylistically, the combat looks entertaining and over-the-top, which is the big draw to Mad World.
From the little we got to see of the game, Mad World looks downright cool. Hopefully, next time that we see Mad World, we'll get to play it for ourselves.
