Joey Davidson is not a psychic.
He had an eerie brush with telepathy this weekend, but the clairvoyant tone of his Saturday hands-on preview of The Conduit is, to my knowledge, a coincidence.
"The Conduit, from the interface down to the game design, looks a lot like Halo," wrote Joey at Comic Con. "I'm not trying to use that as a negative or a positive, but the menus are blue, and the environments have the same toning; I mean, this thing feels a lot like Halo."
In an interview yesterday with The Bitbag, High Voltage Software CEO Kerry Ganofsky spoke at length about The Conduit, his studio's highly anticipated Wii-exclusive first-person shooter, at one point comparing it to a hugely successful and similarly alien-themed shooter on the Xbox 360.
Which shooter, you ask? Just ask Joey.
The Bitbag: If it's a big hit, could (The Conduit) possibly go over to the PS3 or 360?Cue the creepy music and Robert Stack.
Ganofsky: I wouldn't rule anything out. There's definitely a market there. There's a time and a place for everything. If Nintendo, SEGA and High Voltage come to an understanding, I think The Conduit could become the Halo for the Wii.
Prior to Halo 3, the Halo series had sold 14.8 million copies combined. The third game shattered the retail record for single-day sales, taking in $170 million during its first 24 hours on shelves.
The prior record-holder for single-day sales was Halo 2.
For the sake of SEGA and High Voltage Software, which has invested considerably in the supposed existence of a "hardcore" market on Wii, let's hope the comparison holds true at retail, as well. The Conduit is scheduled for a June 9 release, according to Nintendo World Report.
