SEGA Sees Strong Start for The Conduit Sales

Whereas SEGA's previous attempts to appeal to the hardcore audience on the Wii, MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill, did not exactly get a good running start out of the gate. "The mature audience on the Wii is a relatively new audience. The system has traditionally targeted families and kids and not the more mature hardcore gamer. We recognize that when you are trying something new, it may take awhile for the consumer to jump on board with it," said SEGA Vice President of Marketing Sean Ratcliffe.
However, The Conduit tells a different tale for the company. While MadWorld and HotD sold around 66,000 and 44,000 units in their first twenty days on sale, respectively, while IGN reports that VG Chartz projects that The Conduit has neared the 100,000 mark. However, that will not be verified until the next NPD report hits.
So, what has made The Conduit appear to be more successful? "Unlike MadWorld and House of the Dead, The Conduit offers multiplayer, which really will be the key to differentiating this game from others out there," says Ratcliffe. "The most successful Wii games offer some element of multiplayer element to them and this game takes that to a whole new level. Offering incredible online gameplay takes this game out of the TV room and makes it a global experience that we think the Wii gamer has been looking for."
He adds that The Conduit, unlike the other titles named above, offers a more familiar experience to gamers as well. "Where MadWorld and House of the Dead were innovating and offering something totally new, this offers something familiar to gamers – something they know they have a great time with already. This is just giving more of what they already like which means we have a great jumping off point. Essentially, The Conduit is offering hardcore gamers the type of game they already love to play on other systems."
Another difference pointed out is the Teen rating The Conduit bears, versus the Mature rating of MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill, making the game more accessible to a wider audience. Also as a result of the T-rating, their ads and commercials are able to reveal more of the experience players can expect.
But while Ratcliffe will not give SEGA's sales projections for the title, he did offer this: "Though it is still early days in the retail life of the game, we are seeing very strong week one sales and being the best shooter on the Wii means that we think we will see this game out there and selling well for a long time."
