Week-Ending Game Endings - 09.04.09 - Contra III: The Alien Wars
September 4, 2009 | 4:36 PM PST
Well, last week, we wrapped up the old era of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles console game endings here, and I'm still deliberating whether I should bother trying to find videos for any of the Game Boy titles or those from last generation's consoles, especially with Smash-Up just a few weeks away. There's Arcade Attack for the DS in November, but running until then might be overkill. What do you think?
While I mull that over (and see if there are any opinions), we're going to celebrate Monday's WiiWare release of Contra ReBirth with a look back at the ending to what is considered by many to be the best Contra of them all, Contra III: The Alien Wars for the Super NES (also available on Virtual Console).
And yes, folks, it's on Hard Mode:
For the record, I've only ever gotten this ending once. At least legitimately. I think I've used a Game Genie other times. Regardless, it took both me and my father to finish this game in the Hard Mode-- there was no 30-man Konami Code to help us here!
And the simple fact of the matter is, in those days, you didn't get an ending unless you beat it on Hard. They'd tease you to try a harder difficulty, as if it held some promise, but really? If you wanted results, you had to turn it to 11.
And when you told them to bring it, they brought it.
As a bonus, here's an extra video showcasing the samurai talents of Bill Rizer's partner Genbei "Jaguar" Yagyu in Contra ReBirth. This was a bonus cutscene featured in his debut game, the delightfully cheesy Neo Contra for the PlayStation 2:
...and that's how it's done.
