Media: New Super Mario Bros. Wii - GameTrailers Preview and More
October 22, 2009 | 9:50 AM PST
Normally, I wouldn't go about posting previews from other sites here, not even GameTrailers, but I noticed quite a bit of footage and detail in this one for New Super Mario Bros. that I thought made it worth sharing.
Some things to keep an eye out for while watching the video: Larry Koopa perched atop the midway-castle on the world map, to say nothing of the map itself (0:12), the ability to add/drop players during a game without going to the main menu (1:02), an SMB3-ish card game and item menu (1:35), the Super Guide in action (1:54), and Larry Koopa getting hooked on the Brothers (2:40).
Some other details which have come up, courtesy of this month's December issue of Nintendo Power, volume 248 with a NSMBWii cover, are confirmation that Yoshi stays behind when you finish a level, as well as the first news of a second control option: players who prefer analog sticks can hook up the Nunchuk to the Wii Remote and play that way as well.
They also note the maps aren't as rectangular as the DS version (a common complaint I've seen), instead expanding into different directions with "more creative layouts," such as the Desert world scrolling vertically, or the Ice world featuring two parts. Enemy encounters on the map are different this time, too; if you've seen the footage where the players are collecting Toad icons, that is apparently a part of the way to escape the enemies you confront.
Something else that will make fans of the DS game, but not its save system, happy is that while the main save system still works the same way (only after finishing castles, etc.), the game also utilizes a one-use quick-save feature. It's not quite as good as a full-blown save-anywhere function, but should be good enough.
Some other neat effects of note are that classic Mario sounds will come through the Wii Remote's speaker, and, if you hadn't noticed, the game works in widescreen format.
Finally, fans of the Koopalings should get their fair share of the devious demon-turtles in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, as you fight each one twice in their respective worlds: once in the castle at the middle of the world map, and again at the end of the world, where the evil Magikoopa Kamek uses his spells to alter the conditions of the battle in a rather Yoshi's Island-ish way. And while they still require three stomps to put away, those critical of the awesome power of the Fire Flower in the DS game will be happy to know that fireballs aren't quite as effective this time around.
The middle of November cannot possibly get here quickly enough.
