Miyamoto Talks Star Fox's Disappointment, Nintendo's Opposition of Zelda, and More

It's strange. One franchise of Nintendo's which fans are always clamoring to see more of, but aren't always receptive to when it comes (for reasons I won't get into here) is Star Fox. And when MTV Multiplayer sat down with EAD General Manager Shigeru Miyamoto, that series is what came to mind when he was asked if there were any titles which didn't have as much support as he would like.
"I tend to forget those games [laughs]. I'm a big fan of the 'Star Fox' games," he explained. "Every time we make a 'Star Fox' game I'm hoping people will enjoy it as much as I do. Of course the goal every time is to try and make it more and more fun but, at least in Japan, the people that purchase the 'Star Fox' games has decreased over the years. But we still try to make them more fun and hopefully people will see the appeal in those games."
In addition to this, Miyamoto recently delivered a keynote address at the Digital Contents Expo. WiiNintendo has coverage of the event, but here are some items of note from the list.
- At one point, he talks a bit about Zelda, noting that Nintendo was originally opposed to the idea. The reason being, ironically, is what made it such a hit: its non-linearity left people without an idea of where to go, and the company was afraid it might turn off players.
- About Pokemon, he notes that "They told me Americans prefer cool over cute."
- It seems that Kirby's original name was "Tinkle Popo," or something close (it's followed by a question mark). Thank goodness that didn't stick.
- Speaking of names, Miyamoto revealed that both Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe were initially opposed to the "Wii" name. You can guess why. But now, many people feel familiar with it, so that negative association has more or less subsided.
- Finally, he says that the game industry is at its finest when the games are easy to understand and fun to play.
You can find (and try to decipher) the rest of the notes over at WiiNintendo.
