The Sports Authority and Nintendo Unite to Say "We Know Fit, We Know Fun"
November 18, 2009 | 2:04 PM PST

A most unexpected union took place yesterday when sporting good retailer The Sports Authority announced that it was partnering with Nintendo to sell the Wii and its games and accessories in its 465 stores, spread across 45 states. In addition, it is creating a "We know fit. We know fun." experience to better acquaint its customers with the Wii. "The retail concept at Sports Authority stores will feature a special Wii interactive fitness experience and knowledgeable fitness trainers allowing customers to try Wii and Wii Fit Plus before they buy," said a press release.

"Consumers already look to us as the authority for their sports and fitness needs, so the retail partnership with Nintendo is the intersection of fitness and interactive gaming," said Sports Authority President David Campisi. "Sports Authority recognized that the Wii console is a product that can help you stay active and have fun with your family at the same time, which is why the retail partnership with Nintendo is a perfect fit."

"Every day Nintendo continues to attract new people to the world of video games," said Nintendo of America's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Cammie Dunaway. "Now, through our retail partnership with Sports Authority, fitness fans have a convenient location to find fitness-related Nintendo products."

The Sports Authority's Torrance, California location will help kick things off by hosting an event on November 19th featuring leading health and wellness expert Jillian Michaels, who will be promoting her new Wii title "Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2010."

"Americans are always looking for ways to get fit, and many look to Jillian as the expert in motivation and fitness," said Giancarlo Chersich, CEO of Empowered Media. "Jillian wanted to support Sports Authority by helping consumers meet their health and wellness goals."

The event will also have what is being touted as "the world's largest Wii Fit Plus demonstration," in addition to "other surprises." Those eager to learn more about the event can do so at www.thewiiauthority.com or Sports Authority's Facebook fan page.

The "We know fit. We know fun." program will be rolled out at at 102 select Sports Authority stores across the nation on November 19, while the rest will participate come Spring 2010.
