Satoru Iwata revealed Nintendo's future plans for Wii and DS production and gives out a few hints as well.
During the conference, Iwata expressed that though both the Wii and DS systems have been selling out world wide, hardware is not the main goal of Nintendo.
"Users purchase hardware in order to enjoy games," Iwata said. "Our purpose in expanding hardware is to add life to our software business. As a mid to long term final goal, we've set out to sell enough hardware to sell 300,000,000 pieces of software (from both first and third parties)."
While Nintendo may be focusing on software, Iwata confirmed the announcements that Wii production is increasing and says the effects of the increase should be felt starting next month.
He also stated that DS production has increased with units shipped every month reaching 2.5 million systems. The height of GBA's success saw units produced reach 2.3 million units produced in one month.
Iwata also expressed the Virtual Console's success stating that 3.3 million games have been downloaded world wide but this may also mean that sales have been slowing down.
In the last announcement, a total of 1.5 million VC games were sold which makes the current number only double of what it was in January even though the number of Wii owners has been increasing since then.
While Kojima feels that Super Smash Brothers Brawl could sell millions in its current form, Iwata said that "Metroid Prime is not out yet, so this is just the opinion of testers, but it's being rated close to the keyboard and mouse control that's the standard for PC games.”
When asked about the possibility of Nintendo offering software for cell phones or other platforms Iwata replied, "By offering software to other companies, we could probably do good in terms of short term sales, but we'd lose Nintendo's strong point."
Looking into the future, Iwata gave this last hint at what to expect, "It's possible that the market will suddenly change. This is why our hardware development team is considering a variety of things."
